»Leaving one’s own place opens one’s eyes.«
What are you working on at the moment?
For the first time in my life I came to a writers‘ residency to work not on a novel or a translation, but on poetry. I was rather skeptical about it, as I have always had a profound feeling, that poems are entities that come and go as they please and you cannot summon them, as you do with prose. This stay, however, proved me wrong. Not only have I managed to write a dozen new poems, but I have also completed a large poetic form, that I was trying to cope with for the last four years. So I call it a success.
How does your stay in the Literary Colloquium Berlin affect you and your work?
Leaving one’s own place opens one’s eyes. Any travel helps to notice things that you would never see in your own city, which for me is one of the main reasons to travel in general. So my poetic work was affected by Berlin, its places, inhabitants, works of art. I’ve had a beautiful window view, overlooking the Wannsee lake, which also features in one or two poems.
But that is just one thing. The other is the comfort of spending a whole month detached from my everyday Warsaw life, from meeting my friends, going to the same bakery and cafe, etc. Here every little thing is an adventure, cannot be done automatically. It is a little bit tiresome, but at the same time one month seems so much longer than usually. And I think it somehowe transpires into the writing.
What experiences will you take home?
Changing lights and colours of the lake, tree branches and sky above; two of Fouquet’s paintings joined together after centuries; a windy day in Köpenick; the rest I’ll keep to myself, besides some of them are already in the new poems.
The interview took place in January 2018.
