»the reflection of the sun on the lake«

What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment (I suppose for the last two and a half years) I’m working on a novel set in Colombo in postwar Sri Lanka. It is a novelistic study of the distance that exists between desire, on the one hand, and yearning, on the other.

How does your stay in the Literary Colloquium Berlin affect you and your work?
My stay at LCB has been wonderful. It’s been so peaceful, so devoid of distractions. It is very far removed from the kind of situation I usually work in, both in New York and Colombo, and for this reason it allows me to have a kind of distance from my work, to approach it with fresh eyes.

What experiences will you take home?
Above all, the reflection of the sun on the lake.

The interview took place in June 2018.
