John Mateer

John Mateer is a poet as well as curator and essayist for contemporary art. He was born in South Africa and emigrated to Australia in 1989, where he lives up to now. His texts are devoted to cultures as conglomerates of different influences, for example in Indonesia or on the Cocos Islands. He is author of awarded poetry books such as “Barefoot Speech” (2000), “Loanwords” (2002), “Ex-White: South African Poems” (2009) and “Unbelievers, or the Moor” (2013), and the travelogue “Semar’s Cave: an Indonesian Journal” (2004). With the kind support of the German Federal Foreign Office, he was a house guest at the LCB in October 2018.

John Mateer ist Dichter sowie Kurator und Essayist für zeitgenössische Kunst. Er wurde in Südafrika geboren und wanderte 1989 nach Australien aus, wo er heute auch lebt. Seine Texte widmen sich Kulturen als Konglomeraten verschiedener Einflüsse, z. B. in Indonesien oder auf den Kokosinseln. In deutscher Übersetzung sind erschienen »Einmal Weiß. Südafrikanische Gedichte« (Sisyphus, 2009), »Der Narbenbaum« (hochroth Wien 2015) und »Ungläubige« (Sonderzahl, 2017). Mit freundlicher Unterstützung des Auswärtigen Amts war er Hausgast im LCB im Oktober 2018.
