Kurz zuvor lief der Dokumentarfilm »Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am« in den US-amerikanischen Kinos an.

6pm Film screening: »Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am«
(Magnolia Pictures, 2019, R: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders)
8.15pm Sharon Dodua Otoo and Mirjam Nuenning in conversation

The »New York Times Book Review« once described Toni Morrison as “the closest thing the country has to a national writer” (Wendy Steiner, 1992). As much as this statement does justice to the important role that Morrison undoubtedly plays for American literature, it is also highly confusing. After all, the self-image of the nation we are talking about has always been based on the unspoken norm of white masculinity. Morrison wrote throughout her life not in opposition to, but rather despite, this norm. Her work did not only refuse to center whiteness, but it gave countless African-Americans, whom Ralph Ellison had labelled “invisible” in 1952, a sense of visibility.

Toni Morrison, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, died on August 5 of this year. Shortly before her passing, the documentary film »Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am« was shown in US cinemas. This evening, the LCB will be showing it in public for the first time in Germany. Afterwards, we would like to remember Toni Morrison and her life’s work together with the author and Bachmann Prize winner Sharon Dodua Otoo and the translator for English language Afrodiasporic literature, Mirjam Nuenning.

The film screening and discussion will take place in English.
