Umzug. Transport. Transformation.

(A už předtím ani nebylo, prosím pěkně.)

Ono to stejně nějak dopadne.

V mém případě to byly kytky a obrazy. Ten by mohl psát romány! Jsem zvědavá, co nás čeká. Nová normalita?

New Normality

28.06.21Tereza Semotamová

This is a photo of the boot of a colleague’s car which my partner and I borrowed to transport some of our more precious possessions to our new place ahead of the move itself. Move. Transportation. Transformation.

The corona virus has raged with particular intensity in the Czech Republic. Recent statistics show that in the first half of this year, 54 per cent more people died here than last year. Now it’s June and everything seems to be okay. We can do almost anything. We can go to the theatre, the cinema, the sauna; we can meet people and get married. We act as if nothing’s wrong.

You could say everything’s back to normal. But what exactly is ‘normal’? After a tragic winter of being failed by our politicians, nothing is normal any more. (And let’s be honest, nothing was normal before either.)

I am in a strange situation right now. I’m nine months pregnant, which is why I had to move. I don’t know what I’m in for—though plenty of people around me seem to think they know; soon, they say, I’ll have lost all interest in the outside world. Ha ha. We don’t know what we’re in for with the virus either—what will happen when people start travelling more and the cold weather returns. In the Czech Republic, as in Germany, there will be elections in the autumn. In Germany, the Merkel era is drawing to a close; here, we hope it will be the same with the Babiš era. And the planet needs us to treat it differently from the way we’ve been treating it until now. We don’t know exactly how things are going to end. We can pray (if we have any faith left); we can discuss, or not. One way or another, everything comes to an end anyway.

Life is like this photo. We don’t know what the end will look like. But it’s good to transport a few precious things in advance. These are the important things; none of the rest really matters. With me it was flowers and pictures. And my hedgehog, who has come everywhere with me for years. In fact, I’ve thrown him out several times, but each time, the look he gave me from the dustbin turned my heart to mush. Recently my midwife even used him as a simulation baby in an antenatal class. He could write novels! I’m curious to see what the future holds. The new normal?
