Bir gün Galata Köprüsü’nde yürüyordum, kafam dağınık ve kalbim hüzünlüydü. Korku uzun zamandır bu şehrin mevsimiydi, birileri ne hissettiğimi anlayacak ve üstüme çullanacakmış gibi hissediyorum. Manzarayı izlerken köprüde avlanan balıkçılardan birisi benden yardım istedi. Oltasına büyük bir balık yakalanmış olmalı, balıkçı zorlanıyordu. Birlikte oltaya asıldık, çekmeyi başardık. Çuval büyüklüğünde, kocaman br ‘denizanası’ yakalanmıştı. Onu köprüye çıkardık, herkes çığlık çığlığa ‘denizanası’nın etrafında toplanmaya başladı. İnsanlar merakla bakıyordu, o ise hareket ettikçe tuhaf renklerle aydınlatıyordu etrafı. Fosforlu bir lamba gibiydi. Biraz daha yakından bakınca içinde debelenip duran adamı fark ettim.

“Bakın orada bir adam var…” diye bağıracaktım ki sustum.

Sanki ‘denizanası’nın içine saklanmış adamı ele verirsem birileri ona zarar verecek.

Onu bir tek ben fark etmiş olmalıyım. Herkes korku içinde bir şeyler yapmaya çalışıyordu. Işıklar keskinleşti, etraftaki herkes gözlerini kapattı bu güçlü ışığın karşısında. Gözlerimi zorla açtım, ‘denizanası’nın gövdesinden kurtulmuş adamın hızla yürümekte olduğunu gördüm köprünün üstünde. Işık kesildi, her şey kendi rengine döndü.

Biraz önce hızla hareket edip etrafa enerji yayan denizanası ölmüş, içindeki sıvı her taraf yayılmıştı. Ben koşmaya başladım. Adama yetişmek istedim ama o gözden kaybolmuştu.

Yerdeki ıslak ayak izlerini takip etmekten başka çarem yoktu. O ayak izlerini benden başka kimse görmüyordu sanki. İzler beni Karaköy’de bir dükkana kadar getirdi.

Dükkan demir bir kepenkle örtülüydü, boştu. İzlere bakıp adamın dükkana girdiğini anladım. Yaklaştım, “orada mısınız?” diye seslendim.

Dükkanın zeminde bir su birikintisi vardı.

“Buradayım,” diye bir ses geldi birikintiden, bu sesle birlikte birikinti hareketlendi.

“Kimsiniz?”

“Suya bak,” dedi ve birikinti ayaklarımın yanına doğru süzülmeye başladı. Sudaki yansımada kendimi gördüm.

“Bu benim…” su yine dalgalandı. Baktım, sustum, sudaki yansımam ağzını açtı ve konuştu;

“Korkuyorsun, burada olmak öldürüyor seni. Sesin, kalbin, düşüncen rehin alınmış. Su gibi özgür olmalısın ama yapamıyorsun. Korkuyorsun, tüm vereceklerin ve geri alamayacakların için… Denize karışmak için ölmek istiyorsun, ama ölüm bile yasak,”

Sular beni uzaklara taşıyor.

Gidemiyorum.

Auf der Galata-Brücke

Eines Tages lief ich in Gedanken versunken und traurig im Herzen über die Galata-Brücke. Seit langem herrschte die Jahreszeit Angst in dieser Stadt, mir war, als würde jemand wahrnehmen, was ich fühlte, und über mich herfallen. Als ich so in die Gegend schaute, sprach mich einer der Angler auf der Brücke an und bat mich um Hilfe. Offenbar hatte er einen großen Fisch an der Angel und konnte ihn kaum halten. Mit gemeinsamen Kräften gelang es uns, den Fang herauszuziehen. Am Haken hing eine gigantische Qualle, groß wie ein Sack. Als wir sie auf die Brücke hievten, lief mit Geschrei Groß und Klein herbei. Die Leute gafften neugierig, die Qualle indes strahlte bei jeder Bewegung Licht in sonderbaren Farben ab, wie eine phosphoreszierende Lampe. Als ich genauer hinschaute, entdeckte ich einen Mann darin herumzappeln.

„Seht nur, da ist ein Mann drin!“, wollte ich rufen, blieb aber stumm. Als würde, wenn ich ihn verriete, jemand dem Mann, der sich in der Qualle versteckt hatte, schaden.

Offenbar hatte nur ich ihn bemerkt. Panisch taten alle irgendetwas. Das Strahlen wurde greller, die Leute ringsum schlossen geblendet die Augen. Mühsam bekam ich die Augen wieder auf, da sah ich den Mann, der sich aus dem Leib der Qualle befreit hatte, über die Brücke davoneilen. Das Strahlen erlosch, alles kehrte ins eigene Licht zurück.

Die Qualle, die eben noch voller Leben pulsiert und Energie in die Umgebung abgestrahlt hatte, war tot, die Flüssigkeit in ihr ausgelaufen. Ich rannte los. Ich wollte den Mann erwischen, doch er war schon nicht mehr zu sehen.

Mir blieb nichts anderes übrig, als seinen feuchten Fußspuren zu folgen. Niemand außer mir schien die Spuren zu sehen. Sie führten mich zu einem Geschäft in Karaköy.

Vor dem Geschäft war ein Eisengitter heruntergelassen, es war leer. Die Fußspuren führten in den Laden hinein. Ich ging nah heran und rief: „Sind Sie da drin?“

Drinnen auf dem Boden sah ich eine Wasserlache.

„Ich bin hier“, rief es aus der Pfütze und sie bewegte sich.

„Wer sind Sie?“

„Schau ins Wasser!“, forderte mich die Stimme auf, und die Pfütze rann mir vor die Füße. Im Spiegel der Lache sah ich mich selbst.

„Das bin ich …“ Wieder bewegte sich das Wasser. Ich starrte darauf und schwieg, mein Abbild auf dem Wasserspiegel öffnete den Mund und sagte:

„Du hast Angst, es bringt dich um, hier zu sein. Deine Stimme, dein Herz, deine Gedanken sind gekapert. Frei wie Wasser solltest du sein, doch das gelingt dir nicht. Du hast Angst, um alles, was du geben und nicht zurückbekommen wirst. Du willst sterben, um mit dem Meer zu verschmelzen, doch selbst der Tod ist verboten.“

Das Wasser führt mich in die Ferne.

Ich kann aber nicht hin.

On the Galata Bridge

I was walking across the Galata Bridge one day, my thoughts scattered, my heart heavy. For a long time, it has been the season of fear in this city, and I felt as though someone would jump me if they understood how I felt. I was gazing at the view when one of the fishermen on the bridge asked for help. His catch must have been enormous, for he was struggling. Together, we grabbed the rod and started reeling something in. It turned out to be a large ‚jellyfish‘ the size of a burlap bag.

After we hoisted it up onto the bridge, everyone began gathering round with cries and shouts. They stared; it just lay there palpitating, and with each twitch a burst of curious colors lit up the surroundings. Like a phosphorescent lamp. It was when I stooped over for a closer look that I saw the man writhing inside.

I remained silent, did not shout, „Look. There’s a man in there!“
As though if I pointed out the man hidden in the ‚jellyfish‘ someone would harm him. I must have been the only person to notice. Everyone else was scared and frantically moving about. Its light grew brighter and the circle of onlookers shut their eyes against the glare. I forced mine open and saw the man, now liberated from the body of the ‚jellyfish‘, briskly strolling along the bridge. The light went out and everything returned to its normal color. The jellyfish that a moment earlier had been thrashing about radiating energy seemed dead now, its inner fluids pooling on the pavement. I started running, intending to catch up to the man. But he was gone.
I had no choice but to follow his wet footprints, which it seemed only I could see. They led me to a shop in Karaköy.
The iron rolling shutters were down and the shop was empty. I saw that the footprints led inside. I got closer and called out, „Are you there?“
There was a puddle on the floor.
„I’m here,“ a voice said from the pool of water, which was now rippling.
“Who are you?”

„Look at the water,“ he said, and the puddle started moving toward my feet. I saw my own reflection in the water.
„It’s me…“ Again, the water rippled. I stared in silence as my reflection opened its mouth and spoke:

„You are frightened and being here in this place is killing you. Your voice, your heart and your thoughts are being held captive. You should be as free and flowing as water, but that you cannot be. You are afraid because of all you have given and all that has not been given in return… You want to sink into the sea and die, but death, too, is forbidden.“

The water takes me to a far-off place. I am unable to leave.

Sami Özbudak

Ahmet Sami Özbudak was born in Hatay, Turkey in 1980. He studied Literature in İstanbul University and graduated in 2003. Since then he has been working as a journalist in many newspapers and magazines. He has also been writing plays since 1998 and taking backstage roles in theatres since 2002. He started attending the New Text New Theater Project in 2010 where he developed “Stain”. With this play he won 2011 Heidelberger Stückemarkts ‘Europäischen Autorenpreises‘ award. “Stain” was also produced by GalataPerform in 2013. Ozbudak has won the Best Playwright Award at the Theater Awards in Istanbul in October 2013. He also won Afife Jale Award in April 2014 which is one of the most prestigious theater award in Turkey, with the same play.

In the summer of 2014, his novel ‚Masturi Kabare‘ was published by Artemis Publications. Özbudak’s play „Hayal-i Temsil“, which tells the life of Afife Jale and Bedia Muvahhit, took place in the repertoire of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality City Theaters and met its audience in 2014.  In the 2015-2016 season, his play „A Rabbit in a Snow Globe/Karküresinde Bir Tavşan“ was staged on the İkinci Kat Theater.  The play „Stain“ was published by Artemis Publications in the format of a novel and a theatrical text and met with the readers.  For the 2017-2018 season, his play „Sherlock-Hamid“, written for Bakırköy Municipal Theaters, was put on stage. Again this season, he directed the play „Mutluyduk Belki Bugüne Kadar“ on behalf of TwoTwo Production.  With this play, he was nominated among the best director at the Afife Awards. He directed the play „Red Speedo“, which is also a work of Two Two Production, where he transformed the pool of historical Pera Palace Hotel into a stage.

His „Meçhul Paşa“ was put on stage by Tiyatro Adam in 2018. His another play „Süleymankurt“ that he has written for Berlin Maksim Gorki Theater met the audience in Berlin at Studio R.

Özbudak wrote the play ‚Klan‘ for the 2019-2020 season.

In the summer of 2019, his new novel ‚Balkonlu Bakkal‘ was published by Artemis Publications again.

He wrote and directed the play „Gomidas“, which was put on stage as a production of  the  Yolcu Tiyatro during Istanbul Theater Festival in 2020. He wrote the play „Yel“ for the Fringe Ensemble community, which was directed by the famous German director Frank Heuel.

Ahmet Sami Özbudak lives and writes in Istanbul.

Ahmet Sami Özbudak wurde 1980 in Hatay, Türkei, geboren. Er studierte Literatur an der Universität Istanbul und schloss sein Studium 2003 ab. Seitdem arbeitet er als Journalist für verschiedene Zeitungen und Zeitschriften. Seit 1998 schreibt er auch Theaterstücke und spielt seit 2002 hinter den Kulissen von Theatern. Seit 2010 nimmt er am New Text New Theater Project teil, wo er das Stück „Stain“ entwickelte. Mit diesem Stück gewann er 2011 den Heidelberger Stückemarkts ‚Europäischen Autorenpreises‘. „Stain“ wurde 2013 auch von GalataPerform produziert. Ozbudak gewann den Preis für den besten Dramatiker bei den Theater Awards in Istanbul im Oktober 2013. Mit demselben Stück gewann er im April 2014 auch den Afife Jale Award, einen der renommiertesten Theaterpreise in der Türkei.
Im Sommer 2014 wurde sein Roman „Masturi Kabare“ bei Artemis Publications veröffentlicht. Özbudaks Stück „Hayal-i Temsil“, das das Leben von Afife Jale und Bedia Muvahhit erzählt, wurde in das Repertoire der Stadttheater von Istanbul aufgenommen und fand 2014 sein Publikum. In der Spielzeit 2015-2016 wurde sein Stück „A Rabbit in a Snow Globe/Karküresinde Bir Tavşan“ am İkinci Kat Theater aufgeführt. Das Stück „Stain“ wurde von Artemis Publications im Format eines Romans und eines Theatertextes veröffentlicht und fand großen Anklang bei den Lesern. In der Spielzeit 2017-2018 wurde sein Stück „Sherlock-Hamid“, das er für das Bakırköy Municipal Theaters geschrieben hatte, auf die Bühne gebracht. Auch in dieser Spielzeit führte er bei dem Stück „Mutluyduk Belki Bugüne Kadar“ im Auftrag von TwoTwo Production Regie. Mit diesem Stück wurde er bei den Afife Awards für die beste Regie nominiert. Er führte Regie bei dem Stück „Red Speedo“, ebenfalls ein Werk von Two Two Production, bei dem er den Pool des historischen Pera Palace Hotels in eine Bühne verwandelte.
Sein „Meçhul Paşa“ wurde 2018 von Tiyatro Adam auf die Bühne gebracht. Sein weiteres Stück „Süleymankurt“, das er für das Berliner Maksim Gorki Theater geschrieben hat, wurde in Berlin im Studio R aufgeführt.
Für die Spielzeit 2019-2020 schrieb Özbudak das Stück „Klan“.
Im Sommer 2019 wurde sein neuer Roman „Balkonlu Bakkal“ im Artemis Verlag wieder veröffentlicht.
