Michal Hvorecký (1976) is a writer, journalist and translator who works at the Goethe Institute in Bratislava. Since the 1990’s, he has been an essential figure of the progressive stream of Slovak literature. He studied aesthetics at the University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra, and made his literary debut in 1998 with the book “Silný pocit čistoty” (A Strong Sense of Cleanliness). Since then, he has written a number of successful collections of short stories and novels, and his works have been translated into several languages. Michal Hvorecký writes about Slovakia for German newspapers and magazines, and was the first host of “LIT_CAST Slowakei,” a podcast about Slovak literature in German, which is available via the Literary Information Center website. He has also written for children, and is the translator of many literary works and graphic novels from German. Since 2003, he has been several times at the Literary Colloquium Berlin, launching books or holding scholarships.
Michal Hvorecky, geboren 1976, lebt in Bratislava. Auf Deutsch erschienen bereits drei seiner Romane und eine Novelle. Hvorecky verfasst regelmäßig Beiträge für die FAZ, Die Zeit und zahlreiche Zeitschriften. In seiner Heimat engagiert er sich für den Schutz der Pressefreiheit und gegen antidemokratische Entwicklungen. Im Rahmen des Schriftstelleraustauschs »Literarisches Tandem« der Stiftung Brandenburger Tor war er 2006 zu Gast im LCB und hielt seitdem mehrere Lesungen im Haus am Wannsee. Ende März 2021 erscheint »Tahiti. Utopia« in der Übersetzung von Mirko Kraetsch im Tropen Verlag/Klett-Cotta.
