Kinshasa et le Roi des Chinois
Avec ses 17 millions d’habitants, Kinshasa est un pays en soi. La capitale de la RDC est la plus grande ville francophone au monde. Et c’est là que le Roi Philippe, Grand Roi des Belges, a fait un petit tour au début du mois de juin. Pas seulement à Kinshasa, mais également à Lubumbashi dans le sud, la mamelle minière du pays ; puis dans le Kivu, à l’est, à la frontière tendue avec le Rwanda. Rwanda que Londres paye en dizaines de millions d’euros pour accueillir, mieux, pour détenir, les demandeurs d’asile africains repoussés en UK. Les Ukrainiens ont vraiment besoin d’espace. Sorry !
En février dernier, pour le projet GenevAfrica que j’ai créé et que je conduis, j’ai dû me rendre à Kinshasa sur invitation de l’ambassadeur suisse en RDC. Un peu de culture : c’est toujours bien dans le rapport d’activités d’un émissaire qui, essentiellement, défend des intérêts économiques. GenevAfrica, un échange littéraire et artistique entre des auteurs suisses et ceux d’une ville africaine à chaque édition. En 2020, avant le Covid, la correspondance s’était faite entre Genève et Kinshasa.
Février 2022. La correspondance s’est faite entre Genève et Ouidah – capitale mondiale du vodou, au Bénin. Au contraire du Bénin, Kinshasa est un autre monde. Le monde où la richesse n’appauvrit que les plus pauvres du pays, c’est-à-dire la masse. Et ce n’est pas le Roi Philippe et son épouse Mathilde qui me contrediront.
Quand même, faut rappeler que tout le Congo, grand comme 4 fois la France, fut la propriété privée de Léopold II de 1885 à 1908. Propriété privée ! Les nouveaux propriétaires (économiques) sont les Chinois. Ils tiennent la grosse-grosse part du lion. À leurs côtés, les Russes arment à tour de bras. D’ailleurs, ça promet à l’est, tout bientôt, entre Vladimir Poutine, Boris Johnson, Félix Tshisekedi du Congo et Paul Kagame, maître incontestable du Rwanda.
Alors que le Roi des Belges vienne négocier sa part, dans sa propriété privée d’antan, j’entends, je n’y vois aucun inconvénient. Parce que le cobalt ! oui le cobalt : impossible pour l’Occident d’imaginer son monde « vert » de demain sans ce minerai. Pourtant, pour le moment, les Chinois sont assis sur le truc. Ils contrôlent jusqu’à 80% de la précieuse pierre. Voilà pourquoi ils ont « offert » 10 millions de US dollars pour la construction d’un centre culturel et artistique d’Afrique centrale, à Kinshasa. « Sans aucune compensation », bien sûr !
En tout cas, nous attendons la livraison promise pour 2023. Ce serait génial d’y recevoir un Roi, celui des Belges, des Chinois ou d’autres.

Mit seinen 17 Millionen Einwohnern ist Kinshasa eigentlich schon ein Land für sich. Die Hauptstadt der Demokratischen Republik Kongo ist die größte französischsprachige Stadt der Welt. Und genau dorthin hat König Philippe, der große König der Belgier, Anfang Juni einen kleinen Ausflug gemacht. Nicht nur nach Kinshasa, sondern auch in den Süden nach Lubumbashi, den Bergbau-Euter des Landes; dann in die Kivu-Region im Osten des Landes, wo die angespannte Grenze zu Ruanda liegt. Ruanda, dem London dutzende Millionen Euro zahlt, um die in der UK abgewiesenen afrikanischen Asylbewerber aufzunehmen, oder besser gesagt, festzuhalten. Die Ukrainer·innen brauchen wirklich dringend Platz. Sorry!
Letzten Februar musste ich für das Projekt, GenevAfrica, das ich leite und gegründet habe, auf Einladung des Schweizer Botschafters der DRK nach Kinshasa reisen. Ein bisschen Kultur – das ist immer gern gesehen im Geschäftsbericht eines Gesandten, der im Grunde ökonomische Interessen vertritt. GenevAfrica: in jeder Ausgabe ein literarischer und künstlerischer Austausch zwischen Schweizer Autor_innen und denen einer afrikanischen Stadt. Im Jahr 2020, noch vor Covid, fand die Korrespondenz zwischen Genf und Kinshasa statt.
Februar 2022. Die Korrespondenz erfolgte zwischen Genf und Ouidah – der Welthauptstadt des Voodoo in Benin. Kinshasa ist im Vergleich zu Benin eine andere Welt. Die Welt, in der Reichtum nur die Ärmsten des Landes, also die Massen, noch ärmer macht. Und es sind nicht König Philippe und seine Frau Mathilde, die mir widersprechen werden.
Gleichwohl muss daran erinnert werden, dass der gesamte Kongo, viermal so groß wie Frankreich, von 1885 bis 1908 im Privatbesitz von Leopold II war. Privatbesitz! Die neuen (ökonomischen) Eigentümer sind die Chinesen. Sie halten den Löwenanteil. An ihrer Seite rüsten die Russen kräftig auf. Im Übrigen verspricht es im Osten schon bald zwischen Wladimir Putin, Boris Johnson, Félix Tshisekedi aus dem Kongo und Paul Kagame, dem unbestrittenen Herrscher Ruandas, zu knistern.
Dann soll der König der Belgier kommen, um seinen Anteil zu verhandeln, auf seinem ehemaligen Privatbesitz, ich höre, ich habe nichts dagegen. Weil Kobalt! Ja, Kobalt: unmöglich für den Westen sich seine„grüne“ Welt von Morgen ohne dieses Mineral vorzustellen. Allerdings sitzen momentan die Chinesen auf dem Ding. Sie kontrollieren bis zu 80% des wertvollen Steins. Deshalb also haben sie 10 Millionen US-Dollar für den Bau eines zentralafrikanischen Kunst- und Kulturzentrums in Kinshasa „angeboten“. „Ohne irgendeine Gegenleistung“, versteht sich!
Wir warten jedenfalls auf die für 2023 versprochene Übergabe. Es wäre toll, dort einen König zu empfangen, den der Belgier, der Chinesen oder irgendeinen anderen.

With its 17 million inhabitants, the city of Kinshasa can be considered a country in itself. The capital of the DRC is the largest French-speaking city in the world. This is where King Philippe, the Great King of the Belgians, made a visit to in the beginning of June. He did so, not only in Kinshasa but also in Lubumbashi in the south, the country’s mining powerhouse; then in Kivu, in the east, on the tense border with Rwanda. Rwanda, to which London is paying tens of millions of euros, so they can receive, or rather detain African asylum seekers who have been expelled from the UK. The Ukrainians really need space. Sorry!
Last February, for the GenevAfrica project that I created and now lead, I had to go to Kinshasa at the invitation of the Swiss ambassador in DRC. To showcase and display forms of culture is always good to have on the activity report of an emissary who, essentially, defends economic interests. GenevAfrica, a literary and artistic exchange in which, during every edition, Swiss authors exchange with those of an African city. In 2020 and before Covid, the correspondence was between Geneva and Kinshasa.
February 2022. The correspondence took place between Geneva and Ouidah – the world capital of Vodou in Benin. Unlike Benin, Kinshasa is another world. A world where wealth only impoverishes the poorest of the country, that is to say, the masses. And it is not King Philippe and his wife Mathilde who will disagree with me.
Nevertheless, we must remember that the whole Congo, 4 times the size of France, was the private property of Leopold II from 1885 to 1908. Private property! The new (economic) owners are now the Chinese. They hold the biggest lion’s share. On their side, the Russians are arming themselves hand over fist. By the way, things will very soon look promising in the East between Vladimir Putin, Boris Johnson, Félix Tshisekedi of Congo, and Paul Kagame, the undisputed master of Rwanda.
In regards to the King of the Belgians coming to negotiate his share in his former private property, I hear it and have no problem with that. Because of the cobalt! Yes, cobalt. Impossible for the West to imagine its future „green“ world without this mineral.
However, for the moment, the Chinese are well seated on that one thing, controlling up to 80% of the precious stone. This is why they have „offered“ 10 million US dollars for the construction of a Central African Cultural and Artistic Center in Kinshasa. „Without any compensation, of course!”
In any case, we are waiting for the delivery promised for 2023. It would be great to receive a King, whether of the Belgians, the Chinese, or others.“
