Kyjiw, Frühling-Sommer 2022

06.06.22Iryna Tsilyk

Was wird in diesem bizarren Frühling gebraucht?

«Was soll das heißen?»

Kyiv, spring-summer 2022

06.06.22Iryna Tsilyk

The storefront of the famous brand, despite the optimistic inscription „Spring-Summer Collection, 2022“, hints at a small-scale apocalypse: naked mannequins left behind the glass lie in awkward poses, their defenseless bodies remind me of something unbearable and seen in the news. The popular shopping center in Kyiv is quite empty, but still something is working: a gadget store, a jeweler, several clothing stores, a macaroon kiosk…What do you need this bizarre spring?

Everything blooms and smells outside, my city is unusually clean and sparsely populated. For some reason, the most impressive are the ideal flower beds: someone planted these flowers and cared for them in the city where missile strikes still happen from time to time. However, the Kyiv region was liberated from Russian troops, and the city finally woke up.

In the park, children are skating, eating ice cream, playing „war“ game and sharing roles: „Well, you are Ukraine, you are the United States, you are…“ „No, I am Ukraine too! I am Ukraine!” The boy shoutsindignantly.

An elderly woman walks the same old gray dog. Suddenly an air-raid siren sounds over the city. The woman looks at her friend with some doubt asking: „Should we go home?“ „Well,“ says the dog. „I’m tired of this shit. It will be as it will be“.

There are two people sitting at the café’s table. Their military pants and boots, weathered skin, beards and, most importantly, dried dark empty eyes say a lot about where they came from. But strong coffee is what we all need.

At home, while watering the flowers, I notice that my son has covered all the possible cracks in the window frame with his T-shirts. Then I also find a small bottle of iodine. „And what does that mean?“, I ask him. „Well… What if a nuclear strike?“

Chestnuts bloom in the city and cheerful swifts fly like crazy. Somewhere between sirens and thoughts of a possible nuclear war, spring in Kyiv is indescribably beautiful this year.
