Zainab Magdy

Zainab Magdy is an actor and theatre-maker from Egypt. She was born in Giza in 1988 and started acting on stage in 2008. She has most recently been part of Laila Soliman’s “Zig Zig” and has acted in Mahmoud Lotfy’s film “Experimental Summer” (Berlinale 2017). Magdy was also part of the writing and performing project “The Odd Ducks” – a gender sensitive storytelling project. In 2013 she took part in the International Residency for Emerging Playwrights at the Royal Court Theatre in London. She was one of three writers in residence at the Literary Colloquium Berlin in the workshop ‘Hilfe, das Volk kommt!’ (Help, the people are coming!), a cooperation with Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. Her first performance piece “Ordinary People” premiered at Maxim Gorki Theater in October 2016 and was shown in Cairo in November of the same year. She is currently writing her PhD and working on a writing project about Cairo and Berlin exploring life writing and personal relationships to cities.

Zainab Magdy ist eine Schauspielerin und Theatermacherin aus Ägypten. Sie wurde 1988 in Gizeh geboren und steht seit 2008 auf der Bühne: Zuletzt wirkte sie an Laila Solimans »Zig Zig« mit und spielte in Mahmoud Lotfys Film »Experimental Summer«, der 2017 bei der Berlinale gezeigt wurde. Außerdem war Zainab Magdy ein Mitglied des Autor·innen- und Performanceprojekts »The Odd Ducks«, das sich mit gender-sensiblem Geschichtenerzählen beschäftigt. 2013 nahm sie an einer Internationalen Residenz für Nachwuchdramatiker·innen am Londoner Royal Court Theatre teil. Beim Workshop „Hilfe, das Volk kommt!“, einer Kooperation mit dem Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, war sie eine von drei Writers-in-Residence am Literarischen Colloquium Berlin. Ihre erste Performance-Arbeit »Ordinary People« hatte im Oktober 2016 am Maxim Gorki Theater Premiere und wurde im November desselben Jahres in Kairo aufgeführt. Zurzeit schreibt sie ihre Doktorarbeit und arbeitet an einem Schreibprojekt über Kairo und Berlin, in dem sie sich mit Lebensschriften und persönlichen Beziehungen zu Städten befasst.
